DESCRIPTION: APW - Hamilton, "Chesapeake & Ohio Railway Special" marked mvt, Grade 936, 17J, 18S, nickel OF original case with train engraving to rear, "W.L. Fredeking, Hinton W. Va." marked white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, nickel damascene, s#6384. An excellent original example of this rare railroad marked watch with dial correctly marked for Will L. Fredeking who was an official watch inspector for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway. This particular serial number is listed in the Hamilton ledger as having been sold to J.W. Forsinger of Chicago, IL on September 8th, 1897. Forsinger was a railroad watch inspector for a number of lines and was a prolific distributor of Hamilton watches. This example is consistent with the other Chesapeake & Ohio marked Hamiltons we have handled in the past in having a dial marked for W.L. Fredeking and in having its movement listed in the Hamilton ledger as sold to Forsinger as its distributor. From the collection of Dr. Robert Restuccia.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous surfaces, very small scratch and mar adjacent left-side barrel bridge screw, some typical fine to micro-fine scratches elsewhere, mild oxide to regulator assembly; dial with outer chapter hls between 3 and 4, surface scrape just below seconds-register, few tiny pinpoint surface nicks elsewhere; excellent hands, minute with some oxide at hub; case shows very little wear, overall tarnish with scattered darker spots, ding to band at 2, excellent engraving detail; tight bow, crown shows little wear; good glass crystal with glue excess at its seat.
ESTIMATE: $1200 - $2400
